Welcome

The Northern Areas Council is located in an area about 200km north of Adelaide and 60 km east of Port Pirie with Peterborough to our north and Clare to the south of the district.

The region is also experiencing strong housing demand as people are choosing to relocate to vibrant rural districts characterised by stately 'turn-of-the-century' homes.

The Northern Areas Council district is a strategic link for visitors commuting to or from the popular Flinders Ranges and can cater for drive through tourists with excellent caravan parks at Gladstone, Laura and Jamestown and accommodation at hotels in each town. Council's district is also adjacent to the major east-west road link from Sydney to Perth and includes a section of the Indian Pacific rail line.

The district hosts a number of significant local events which are important to their respective communities.

Council Celebrates $2.1m grant for Southern Flinders Stadium

Northern Areas Council is celebrating in the wake of receiving a $2.1m grant from the Federal Government Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations, through the Local Schools Working Together Program.

The project, to construct a multipurpose sporting complex at Ewart Oval in Gladstone is a combined project between Northern Areas Council, Gladstone High School, Gladstone Primary School, St Joseph's Parish School, and the Southern Flinders Stadium Committee.

The stadium will form an integral part of the physical education curriculum for the students of the Southern Flinders region. Local sporting groups will host association sports matches at the stadium. The stadium will open opportunities for a range of sport and recreational activities that are not currently available in the region due to lack of appropriate facilities, for example aerobics, tai chi, kindergym, etc.

A multi-purpose function area will be included within the facility, this will provide the schools with a large multi-purpose hall which can be used for a range of programs and teacher training activities. The function area will also be utilised by community sport and recreation clubs as a clubroom facility, consolidation of sporting clubs in the region at one venue will assist to increase the viability of these clubs into the future. The function area will also be hired out to community groups, businesses and individuals for a range of functions.
