Media Release - Northern Areas Council Responds to Community Feedback in Adopted Budget

Published 3rd July 2026

Northern Areas Council has adopted its 2026–27 Annual Business Plan & Budget and Long Term Financial Plan at a Special Meeting of Council held on Wednesday, 1 July 2026.

Following consideration of community feedback received during the public consultation period, Council resolved to reduce the proposed general rate increase from 6.95% to 4.95%. The adopted budget balances affordability for ratepayers with the need to maintain services, renew infrastructure and work towards long-term financial sustainability. The draft budget released for consultation had originally proposed a 6.95% increase in general rate revenue.

The Budget and Long Term Financial Plan set the direction for Council's investment in essential services, infrastructure and community facilities across the Northern Areas Council area over the coming year and beyond.

Mayor Keith Pluckrose said Council had carefully considered the feedback received from the community before making its final decision.

“We know a lot of people are doing it tough with the rising cost of living, and we've listened to the concerns our community has raised. That's why we've scaled back the proposed rate increase while making sure we can continue to deliver the services, maintain our infrastructure and invest in the things our communities rely on every day.”

The adopted budget includes continued investment in roads, community infrastructure and public facilities, while maintaining existing service levels across the district.

The budget includes approximately $8.5 million in capital works and asset renewal projects, with a significant focus on maintaining and improving existing infrastructure assets across the Council area.

Key items across the budget include:

  • Continued focus on road infrastructure, including reseals, unsealed road resheeting, safety seals, bridges, footpaths and kerbing.
  • Ongoing stormwater management planning and drainage improvements across the district.
  • Upgrades to playgrounds, walking and cycling trails and recreational assets.
  • Continued public toilet upgrades and building improvement programs, including upgrades to support disability access
  • Continued support for community events and initiatives across the region.

Mayor Pluckrose said the Budget and Long-Term Financial Plan provided a clear pathway for the future.

“This Budget is about getting the balance right. It looks after the things our community needs now while making sure we're planning ahead for the future. It means we can keep investing in our most important area in roads, as well as footpaths, facilities and local projects without losing sight of the need to manage Council's finances responsibly for the long haul.”

Council thanks community members who took the time to review the draft documents and provide feedback during the consultation process.

The adopted 2026–27 Annual Business Plan & Budget and Long-Term Financial Plan will be available on Council's website following finalisation of the adopted documents.
