Ayr Street

Ayr Street Redevelopment

Northern Areas Council is continuing to work with Wallbridge Gilbert Aztec (WGA) and Landskap to deliver a major upgrade to Ayr Street in Jamestown. This project aims to:

  • Make the street safer, more accessible, and more enjoyable for pedestrians.
  • Create spaces for recreation and community events.
  • Highlight and enhance the unique character of Ayr Street.
  • Support local businesses and economic growth.
  • Improve traffic flow and parking, including spaces for caravans and RVs.

Update - August 2025

Progress so far

Stage 1 is complete – all power lines in Ayr Street have been placed underground, and new LED streetlights have been installed. This has opened up the street, created a more welcoming feel, and improved night-time lighting.

What’s next

The final stages of the civil design are nearly finished and are expected to be completed by late 2025.

The design has been developed with strong support from the Jamestown community – including residents, local groups, Council staff, and elected members. Community feedback has been gathered and included at every stage to make sure the redevelopment meets local needs.

Working together for the best result

To get the best outcome for our town, Council has partnered with the Department of Infrastructure and Transport (DIT). This partnership means the project now also includes upgrades to the DIT-owned main carriageway of Ayr Street and RM Williams Way.

By working together from the start, Council and DIT can deliver a complete “shopfront to shopfront” upgrade, avoiding the delays and disruptions that often happen when separate projects overlap. DIT will fund the additional roadworks.

Next steps

Once the engineering design is complete, Council will again ask the community for input – this time to help choose the final touches like trees, shrubs, grasses, seating, and other landscaping features.

UPDATE - Summer 2025 Newsletter - Ayr Street Redevelopment

Council is continuing to work with Wallbridge Gilbert Aztec (WGA) and Landskap to deliver a major upgrade to Ayr Street in Jamestown. The goal is to enhance the town’s charm while improving safety, accessibility, and resilience to weather events.

Where Are We Now?

As of August 15, Ayr Street is no longer part of the National Heavy Vehicle Register’s Level 2A route. Heavy vehicles must now use the OD5 route.

The Department for Infrastructure and Transport (DIT) is partnering with Council to upgrade the relevant sections of Ayr Street and RM Williams Way aligning with the project.

Council engineers are currently finalising the 70% design phase, which includes traffic lane upgrades. DIT is contributing to the cost of this work.

What’s Next?

  • The 70% design, including independent verification, is expected to be completed before Christmas.
  • Final community consultation will take place once the design is ready.
  • The full (100%) design is expected early in the New Year.
  • Footpath upgrades will begin as soon as possible after design works are complete.
  • Council is working to secure grant funding before construction can begin.

Environmental sustainability.

Water Sensitive Urban Design (WSUD) and passive irrigation of trees and garden beds may be deployed in future design phases of the project  to manage storm water more effectively, promoting environmental sustainability.

Existing Trees to be reused.

As part of the final design, the Council will aim to reuse and transplant some of the existing trees into the new layout where appropriate. Expert opinions will be sought to assess the feasibility of the tree transplantation.

Tree Planting Plan.

Along with the current trees, a comprehensive tree selection plan will include species with appropriate canopies, environmental resilience, and visual appeal.
