Northern Areas Council is updating how it consults with the community and we’re asking for your feedback.
We’ve prepared a Draft Community Engagement Policy, which explains how Council will involve residents in decisions that affect the community.
What is this about?
All councils are required by law to have a Community Engagement Policy.
This draft policy:
- outlines how Council will communicate with you
- explains how you can have your say on council decisions
- sets minimum standards for consultation and feedback
It has been updated to reflect new requirements under the Local Government Act 1999 and the Community Engagement Charter (December 2025).
This new policy will replace Council’s current Public Consultation Policy.
Why your feedback matters
We want to make sure our approach to community engagement works for you.
You can help shape:
- how Council communicates with the community
- how feedback is collected and shared
- how we make engagement more inclusive and accessible
What can’t be changed:
- the legal requirements Council must follow
- obligations set by the Community Engagement Charter
Consultation details
Opens: Friday, 22 May 2026
Closes: Friday, 12 June 2026 (5:00pm)
