Northern Areas Council is deeply disappointed that Golden North, a cornerstone business in Laura and a proud part of our community for over 100 years, will be relocating its operations to Murray Bridge.

Golden North has been more than just an employer in Laura – it has been part of the fabric of our town and a key contributor to the economic and social life of our wider region. The decision to relocate affects approximately 50 staff and will be felt across many families and businesses within our community.

To address these impacts, Northern Areas Council is working with State Government to deliver the $1 million Community Infrastructure Program announced by the Government of South Australia.

Mayor Sue Scarman said the funding will help soften the economic impact and provide lasting benefits for the region.

“We are incredibly saddened by Golden North’s decision to relocate after more than a century in Laura. This is a significant loss for our community, and we know it will affect many people. However, we are committed to ensuring Laura remains strong and vibrant,” the Mayor said.

“The initial support package will enable Council to deliver targeted investment in priority projects that stimulate local employment, boost morale, and help future-proof our region.”

In addition to this package, Council is actively working alongside the Government of South Australia and Regional Development Australia Yorke and Mid North to pursue positive economic outcomes and ensure meaningful support is in place for affected workers and the broader region.

Golden North will progressively relocate over the next 12 months, with the Laura facility expected to close mid-2026. During this time Council will engage with the community to help shape how the Community Infrastructure Program is delivered.
