Council were delighted to witness the National Shearing and Wool Handling Competition, and local Jamestown Community School student, David Duncan, recognised at Government House on Friday 23 February 2024 as part of a group of inspiring South Australians recognised for their contributions to South Australia.

The National Shearing and Wool Handling Competition, held in Jamestown in October 2023, has been honoured with the prestigious South Australian Citizen Event of the Year Award. This recognition highlights the exceptional efforts of the local organizing committee and the community at large in hosting a remarkable event that brought together over 250 local and international competitors and attracted more than 600 attendees from across Australia and New Zealand.

Matt Scharkie, chair of the local organizing committee, accepted the award at the official South Australian Citizen of the Year Awards dinner held on Friday night. He was supported by dedicated individuals such as Steph Lunn, Jenny-Lee and Tyson Sparks, as well as a committee comprising approximately 15 other community members. The National Shearing and Wool Handling Competition stood out as the standout event of the year for its ability to unite people from diverse backgrounds and regions, fostering camaraderie and showcasing Australia’s wool industry.

Mayor Sue Scarman expressed pride for our regional communities and the inspiring people who are part of them.

“The event not only showcased the talents of competitors but also brought substantial economic and social benefits to the Northern Areas region. The influx of interstate and international visitors resulted in full occupancy of local accommodations in Jamestown and surrounding towns, providing a significant boost to local businesses”. Mayor Scarman said.

The National Shearing and Wool Handling Competition has undoubtedly left a lasting legacy, not only as a premier sporting event but also as a testament to the power of community involvement and collaboration. Its recognition as the South Australian Citizen Event of the Year is a well-deserved accolade, reflecting the dedication and hard work of all those involved.

David Duncan, Jamestown Community School student, received a commendation for the Award for Leadership in Languages and Cultures. This award recognises outstanding young people who have demonstrated leadership and commitment to advocacy for a multilingual and culturally diverse Australia.

David is an outstanding young person, and his academic path stands out remarkably. He is the sole student in his school who has made the exceptional choice to pursue advanced language studies at the Year 12 level, opting for an online course through Open Access College.

David’s journey is an inspiring one, where his experiences have enriched not only his own life but also touched the hearts and minds of those around him. As he continues to explore new horizons and strive for personal growth, his passion for language, culture, and humanitarian values will undoubtedly make a lasting impact on the world, contributing to a more inclusive, interconnected, and harmonious society.

David credits his success partly to Danya McKay (English Teacher & Senior School Coordinator) and Laura Masson (Open Access Spanish Teacher) for their investments over the previous two years, as well as for being driving forces during the nomination process.
